This project was for the Office of Township and Leasing at Ranku on Bathurst Island. It consisted of the supply and installation of a shade structure and playground, catering for children from ages 2 to 13 years.

LOGISTICS

With very little supplies or sub-contractors located on Tiwi Island we had to freight a substantial amount of equipment and material to the island. In total, we barged our own temporary fencing, 12 bulka bags,8 pallets, a rubber mixer plus our own vehicle and machine. The client offered the accommodation on the island. The ammenities we in excellent condition and well received by our employees.

Upon our arrival we were collected by Brian Tipungwuti (a local Traditional Owner) and taken for a tour of the area which was a terrific opportunity.

CONSTRUCTION

Upon our arrival we confirmed the exact location of the playground with the local school principal and erected the temporary fence. Set out and excavations were next and thankfully the earthworks went very smoothly.

We expected to encounter some hard digging so it was welcomed when all our footings were completed early.

The playground was constructed on time and the shade structure went up as expected. We were able to use some of BIHA’s (local contractors) equipment and machinery to help lift the cover onto the posts. This was a great help and sped up the process. A shout out to Matt and Charlie who helped in the process.

Upon completion of the playground we set our focus on the basketball court. We brought our own pressure washer and began cleaning the court. Once cleaned we line-marked the court. The difference was stark! Local kids were on the court that night shooting hoops, putting a smile on all of our faces.

Our staff thoroughly enjoyed working at Bathurst Island. Despite the challenges with providing goods and services to a remotely located site, the project was completed and delivered on time and budget. Site safety and WHS were applied on site and the project was completed without any incidents.
